Ter Hell hat sich in seiner Malerei, aber auch in Aktionen und Videoarbeiten, immer wieder mit Transformationsabläufen beschäftigt. Sein Interesse gilt zum einen den Anpassungsleistungen, welche soziale, politische und technische Entwicklungen dem Bewusstsein abverlangen, und zum anderen den Möglichkeiten die dieses hat, Entwicklungen zu beobachten und ihnen gegebenenfalls subversiv zu begegnen. In seiner neuen Installation „Cerebral Celebration“ markiert ter Hell den Ausstellungsraum als Schnittstelle zwischen kreativem Prozess und gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit. Mit verschiedenen Positionen strukturiert er den Raum und prüft die Statik, nicht zuletzt auch des eigenen Werkkomplexes. So erkennt man Bezüge zu verschiedenen Momenten in ter Hells Malerei, als auch Ausblicke im Sinne von „was zu tun ist“. Es entsteht ein gewissermaßen gewendetes Panoptikum, angelegt als Möglichkeit eines bewegten „all seeing I“ im 3D-Rüttler "Gesellschaft".
Die Ausstellung versteht sich auch als eine Einführung in ein Denken in und mit Malerei, das in den späten siebziger Jahren mit Gemälden wie „Hi Jackson“, „Ich bin´s“ und „Es wird alles anders“ begann. „Hi Jackson“, 1979 gemalt, war ein sportlicher Gruß aus Kreuzberg, an den zu dieser Zeit schon im Pantheon der institutionellen Avantgarde angekommenen Heroen Pollock. Zwei Worte in rotem Lack über die Leinwand gehiebt. Die Silbe „son“ rutscht in die zweite Zeile. Wer spricht da? Das Bild „Ich bin´s“ gibt Antwort. Ter Hell machte die Parole zum Motiv und zum Fundament seines malerischen Selbstverständnisses. Schrift ziert seine Gemälde immer wieder, aber auch Symbole brechen durch, Punkte platzen, Flächen stürzen ein. Er beherrscht die Grammatik der gestischen Malerei und führt sie in zahlreichen Werkgruppen zu malerischen Lösungen verschiedenster Fragestellungen, deren Gemeinsamkeit die immer wieder zu überprüfende Position des eigenen Selbst im gesellschaftlichen Prozess ist. In diesem Sinne kann man seine Werkgruppen auch als Einträge in ein Lexikon der Bewusstseinsbildung begreifen.
Ter Hell, 1954 in Norden geboren, lebt seit 1976 in Berlin. Studium an der HdK Berlin, Meisterschüler bei Fred Thieler. 1979 gründete er die Künstlergruppe und Galerie 1/61 mit. Er erhielt ein PS1-Stipendium in New York, sowie den Kunstpreis „Glockengasse“, Köln und den Philipp-Morris-Preis. Ter Hell hatte zahlreiche Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland. Seine Arbeiten sind unter anderem in den Sammlungen Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie, Kunsthalle Emden und Kunsthalle Nürnberg vetreten.

In the context of his painting, actions and video works ter Hell has consistently confronted himself with sequences of transformations. Hell’s essential interest of knowledge applies to the adaptabilities to be realized according to technological, social, and political developments of the present time; in particular these adaptibilities asked from the consciousness.
Hell’s actual installation ‚cerebral celebration’ marks the interface between creative processus and reality viewed as social entity, by structuring space within different positions and verifying the statics, not at least interwoven with the whole of Hell’s oeuvre. Erge, we have the option to perceive both: the recognition of various moments of Hell’s paintings as well as the anticipation of that what ought to be done. The consequence is a roled-over-panopticon, which is constructed in itself as feasibility of an ‚All-Seeing-I-Mobile’ in contours of the 3D-Shaker named ‚Society’.
The installation offers an introduction into a mentality about and with painting, that has come into force in the late Sixties of the 20th century with his paintings like ‚Hi Jackson’, ‚Ich bin’s’ (It’s me) or ‚Es wird alles anders’ (Everything will be different). ‚Hi Jackson’ from 1979 has been an homage to the hero Pollock who long ago reached the heights of the avantgarde’s Pantheon; ‚Hi Jackson’ has been Hell’s sportsman-salute having come directly from Kreuzberg. Two words in red lacquer slashed onto the canvas; the syllable ‚son’ is gliding into the second line. Who is the one speaking here? The painting ‚Ich bin’s’ (It’s me) gives the answer. Hell makes the parole into the motive and into the base of his self-assessment as an artist. Writing is going to adern or ornament his oeuvre, furthermore ciphers and symbols are breaking through, points are going to be blown out, and surfaces are going to collapse. Hell knows the grammar of gesture-like painting and leads it to artistic solutions of different formulations of the question how to reflect the social immanent position of the own ego as well as to reflect that position or role according to permanent movements of societies. In this spirit we can understand his groups of works as entries into an encyclopedia of awareness raising.
Ter Hell is born in Norden, Germany and lives in Berlin since 1976. He studies at the ‚Hochschule der Künste, having been a master scholar of Fred Thieler. Hell was a founder of the artist group and gallery 1/61; received the PS1 scholarschip in New York, Kunstpreis Glockengasse and the Philip-Morris-Price. Having realized numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally, his works are amongst others in collections like Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie, Kunsthalle Emden and Kunsthalle Nürnberg.
